Eastern Railway, headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the most critical zones in Indian Railways, playing a vital role in connecting eastern India with the rest of the country. From daily suburban commutes to long-distance freight and passenger services, Eastern Railway operates an extensive network that boosts the region’s socio-economic infrastructure.

Participating in Eastern Railway tenders presents a valuable opportunity for contractors, vendors, and service providers across industries such as construction, supply, maintenance, and logistics. Here's a detailed guide on how to apply for Eastern Railway tenders in the Kolkata Division through the Indian Railways E-Procurement System (IREPS).

HISTORY OF EASTERN RAILWAY

On 15th August 1854, the first train of the East Indian Railway (EIR) ran from Howrah to Hooghly, covering a distance of just 24 miles. This train stopped at Bally, Serampore, and Chandannagore, and marked the beginning of regular train services in the region.

By 1862, the railway line had reached the west bank of the Yamuna River on its way to Delhi. In 1864, before a bridge was built over the Yamuna, trains between Calcutta and Delhi had their coaches ferried across the river at Allahabad by boat. In 1865, the Yamuna Bridge at Allahabad was opened, and by 1867, the line was extended from Allahabad to Jubbalpore.

In 1925, the Government of India took over EIR and divided it into six divisions. The lower divisions were Howrah, Asansol, and Dinapore, while the upper divisions were Allahabad, Lucknow, and Moradabad.

On 14th April 1952, Eastern Railway (ER) was formed. It included divisions from the East Indian Railway like Sealdah, Howrah, Asansol, and Danapur, as well as the entire Bengal–Nagpur Railway (BNR). ER's network at the time stretched from Howrah to Mughalsarai in the north, Visakhapatnam in the south, and Nagpur in central India. The upper divisions of EIR were added to Northern Railway.

Later, in 1955, the sections of BNR that connected Howrah to Visakhapatnam, Nagpur, and Katni were separated and became part of the newly formed South Eastern Railway.

Some important milestones:

By 30th September 2002, Eastern Railway covered a total of 4245.61 kilometres.

On 1st October 2002, three divisions – Dhanbad, Mughalsarai, and Danapur – were separated to create a new zone called East Central Railway with its headquarters in Hajipur.

As of October 2019, Eastern Railway has a network of 2815 route kilometres across four divisions: Sealdah, Howrah, Asansol, and Malda. Out of this, 2118 kilometres are electrified using 25 KV AC traction.
